IBM may buy Sun – International Business Machines is in talks to acquire Sun Microsystems?

International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) is reportedly in talks to buy Sun Microsystems Inc. The purchase would give IBM access to loyal Sun customers. IBM will increase its share in the computer-server market.

There are reports that IBM may pay about $6.5 billion (Wall Street Journal) valuing Sun at almost twice its closing price last trading day. The shares of Sun have advanced in the stock market.

Sam Palmisano the IBM Chief Executive Officer (CEO) has acquisitions as strategy to build up the company during the recession. Buying Sun Microsystems would increase IBM’s share of global server sales to 43 percent, increasing the lead over Hewlett-Packard’s 30 percent.
