Google’s Gmail email service was down again on Thursday for about 2 hours. This has drawn the attention and anger of lot of people across the world. Though only a ’small subset of users’ were unable to access their email accounts Thursday (according to Google) but this outage raised many questions as it followed one earlier this month for nearly two-hour.
Google’s outages come in headlines as it is now used by millions worldwide. But there are more resons Why you can trust Google than why you can not:
- Many corporate email systems are down more often than Gmail.
- Google 99.9% availablity is for Premium users – who enjoy better support and availability.
- 99.9% availability per year means out of 8760 hours it will be available for 8751.24 hours or it will be down maximum for about 9 hours. Now consider the outages this year and decide yourself if they were within limits?
- Usually most of the corporate systems are available only for about 90 to 95%
What I have noticed is that people have wasted more time in discussing this issue on blogs, writing tweets, comments and reading them than the whole outage itself.
