Was Skype a better buy for Facebook? Microsoft has bout Skype Global VOIP player for more than 8 Billion Dollors. However we feel Skype was a better buy for Facebook.
Skype is a software application and Global VOIP player in market, Skype is useful for users to talk, chat by video using Internet.
Microsoft, Google and Facebook were trying to buy Skype.
Who wanted Skype most?
Skype was not for Google
Skype was not for Google as they never wanted it. Facebook wanted to take Skype more than Google, because Google already has advanced features like Google Talk, Google Voice which supports Voice chating, Video and SMS, and also Google added newly Video calls. Also this Google Talk is Google’s own product.
- Google partnership with sprint : Sprint is for voice.
- Google has expert in house VOIP expertise (inherited with the Grand Central and Gizmo)
- Skype is not suitable for Google, already google is great in world and Skype is also a very big. If google takes the partnership with Skype, definitely Skype dominates Google.
There were reports that Facebook was ready to pay 7.5 billion dollars for Skype.
Skype-Facebook synergy
Facebook was technologically more closer to Skype than Google and Microsoft. Previously Facebook launched instant messaging platform, for that platform Facebook has a with partnership a Skype. There are many instances where Skype was integrated into Facebook.
Facebook already has chat – with capabilities of voice and video it would have become an all encompassing platform which can rival Google for its internet dominance.
What Microsoft will do with Skype
What needs to be seen is what Microsoft will really do with Skype. Miccrosoft is traditionally a desktop company. The response to Microsoft Online Services – its cloud offering has not been very positive and they have been forced to rebrand it as Office 365.
With Skype Microsoft may want to increase its footprint in the consumer internet market. Skype is used by individuals and business alike. Microsoft already has similar product Office Communication Server (OCS) and Microsoft Lync Server in the similar space for business. how Microsoft is going to position this service will be something to be seen.
Revenue model of Microsoft from Skype
Have many questions about this
- Are they looking from some ad supported model?
- Are they planning to integrate it with Bing or Microsoft Cloud service like Office 365?
- Are they planning to use the platform to make something similar to Facebook?
